The Build Sheet #1: A status without a reason is a fact you can't reason from

A small thing we changed in our own product this week, because it is not actually small.

When a person was removed from active status, the system recorded that it happened. It did not record why.

Six months later that is a record you cannot reason from. Retired? Transferred? Long-term injury? Certification lapsed? Light duty? Each of those means something completely different for recall lists, for who you can legitimately call in when you are short, for whether that seat is gone or just paused. In the record, they all looked the same.

Public safety agencies live with this in a hundred places. A status without a reason. A date without a source. A change without an author. The event is captured. The meaning is not. The meaning is the part somebody will need later.

The uncomfortable version of the question: if the person who made that change left the agency, does the record still explain itself?

We are building Parallax ORP to be usable by the person who inherits the system, not just the person who set it up. That means capturing why alongside what, even when it makes a form slightly longer.
